Health Testing
We certify our sires & dams for hips, elbows, heart & eyes.
We also perform genetic testing for NCL, ICH, DM, PRA & MD.
Regarding Hip Testing
Many breeders have a strong preference for either OFA or PennHIP for hip certifications. The two methods focus on different aspects of hip conformation. We believe that both evaluations provide useful information, so we submit x-rays to both. The PennHip evaluation provides the most information, and is a more objective process. So we look for a solid PennHip evaluation, with a corroborating report from OFA. Positive evaluations from both testing authorities increases our confidence in our choice of dogs for breeding.
PennHIP has made some changes to their reporting methods. Previously, they provided both a measurement of the dog’s distraction index (DI) and a percentile rating. The distraction index is a concrete measurement of the tightness of the dog’s hips. The measurement typically remains consistent as the dog grows, so it provides reliable information for dogs as young as 4 months old. The lower the DI number, the tighter the hip joint. Tighter hips lower the risk of hip dysplasia. The percentile rating has been discontinued.
Coefficient of Inbreeding (COI)
Many purebred dogs today are suffering from the impact of irresponsible inbreeding in the quest of emphasizing specific physical characteristics. This practice has compromised the overall health of many breeds. The average 10 generation COI for Golden Retrievers is 7.93%. COI percentages significantly lower than the breed average are desirable. The "Our Dogs" page of our site lists the 10 generation COI along with the health information for each of our active dogs. Our current breeding dogs all have 10 generation COI's lower than 6%. COI of each potential pairing factors into all of our breeding decisions.
Genetic Testing
Although not currently considered standard testing for Goldens, we perform genetic testing on our dogs. We recently began to learn about Neuronal Ceroid Lipofuscinosis (NCL) in Goldens. This is a devastating neurological disorder, and although we had never seen an affected dog, we wanted to make sure that it would not be an issue in our lines. When a genetic test became available, we tested all of our breeding dogs, and were relieved to learn that they are all clear. Goldens also commonly carry the gene for Ichthyosis (ICH), a skin disorder that can cause flaking of the skin, similar to dandruff. Severe symptoms that cause discomfort to the dog are very rare, and many dogs that are genetically affected have no symptoms at all. However, DNA testing for this gene is available, so we have been able to eliminate the possibility of having genetically affected puppies. The gene for a second, more serious form of Ichthyosis (ICH 2) was recently identified. Our entire breeding pack tested clear. Genetic testing is also available for the genes that cause Degenerative Myelopathy, Progressive Retinal Atrophy & Muscular Dystrophy. These genes are called autosomal recessive, which means that for a puppy to be affected, they must receive a defective gene from both parents. We have brought several dogs into our breeding pack that are clear on the full DNA panel for Goldens, and our carriers are only bred to a clear. This eliminates the possibility of producing affected puppies.
